Senior Regulatory Compliance Engineer / Principal Engineer

**Position Summary
**
Johnson Controls is seeking an experienced Senior Regulatory Compliance Engineer / Principal Engineer to lead regulatory compliance and certification activities for Controls and Building Automation Systems across Europe.
In this role, you will serve as the subject matter expert for European regulatory requirements and product certifications, ensuring that products meet all applicable safety, EMC, radio, environmental, and regulatory standards throughout the product lifecycle. You will collaborate with engineering, product management, quality, manufacturing, suppliers, and certification agencies to successfully develop, certify, and launch compliant products across European and global markets.
This position has a primary focus on EU and UKCA compliance requirements while supporting global certification activities where required.
**Key Responsibilities
**
- Regulatory Compliance & Product Certification
- Lead regulatory compliance activities for new product development and existing product portfolios.
- Develop and execute certification strategies to ensure timely market access.
- Manage product compliance throughout the entire lifecycle, from concept through product retirement.
Coordinate and oversee testing, certification, documentation, and approval activities. - Act as the primary liaison with certification agencies, Notified Bodies, and external laboratories.
- Support global product launches by aligning certification requirements across regions.
- Regulatory Intelligence & Standards Expertise
Monitor and interpret regulatory developments, standards updates, and industry requirements impacting the product portfolio. - Provide expert guidance on European directives, regulations, and harmonized standards.
- Support engineering teams with compliance requirements during design reviews, risk assessments, and hazard analyses.
- Develop and maintain internal compliance procedures, conformity assessment frameworks, and best practices.
- Represent Johnson Controls in industry standards organizations and technical committees when required.
**Compliance Documentation & Governance
**
- Maintain technical files, declarations of conformity, certificates, risk assessments, and regulatory records.
- Ensure complete and accurate documentation for EU and UKCA compliance.
- Support internal and external audits related to regulatory compliance.
- Drive continuous improvement of compliance processes and documentation standards.
- Communicate compliance status, risks, approval timelines, and mitigation actions to project teams and leadership.
**European & UK Regulatory Compliance
**
Ensure compliance with applicable European regulations and directives, including:
- Low Voltage Directive (LVD)
- Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)
- Radio Equipment Directive (RED)
- RoHS
- ATEX
- Machinery Regulation
- Pressure Equipment Directive (PED)
- UKCA requirements
- Apply relevant IEC, EN, and ETSI standards for building automation, HVAC controls, and connected devices.
- Support international certification programs, including the IECEE CB Scheme.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration
Partner with Engineering, Product Management, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, and regional business teams. - Provide guidance on compliance strategy, testing requirements, documentation, and risk mitigation.
- Support activities at manufacturing sites, supplier locations, customer installations, and test laboratories.
- Build strong relationships with compliance teams across EMEA, North America, and APAC.
**Required Qualifications
**
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical field.
- Minimum 10 years of industry experience.
- At least 5 years of experience in product safety, regulatory compliance, agency certification, or risk analysis.
- Strong knowledge of European certification processes and regulatory requirements.
- Experience with building automation systems, HVAC controls, industrial electronics, or related products.
- Deep understanding of IEC, EN, EMC, safety, and radio standards.
- Proven experience managing product certifications from concept through market launch and ongoing product support.
- Strong project management, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to solve complex compliance challenges and influence cross-functional teams.
- Fluent English communication skills, both written and verbal.
**Preferred Qualifications
**
- Professional certifications related to product safety or compliance.
- Experience with CE Marking, UKCA, CB Scheme, and Notified Body processes.
- Knowledge of Building Management Systems (BMS), Smart Buildings, HVAC Controls, or Connected Devices.
- Familiarity with quality management systems such as ISO 9001.
- Understanding of software and firmware implications for product compliance and certification.
- Experience supporting global product certification programs.
