About the Role
Swiss Himmel GmbH is looking for an experienced Trino Power User / Analyst to support the design, deployment, operation, and optimization of distributed data access platforms.
The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience with Trino or Presto, Kubernetes-based deployments, heterogeneous data sources, query performance optimization, and modern data architectures. You will work closely with Data Engineers and Analysts to improve data access, platform performance, and distributed analytics capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
Trino Platform Engineering
Design, deploy, and operate Trino clusters on on-premises Kubernetes environments.
Configure and maintain Trino catalogs and connectors for heterogeneous data sources.
Integrate data sources including Hive, Iceberg, Kafka, and object storage.
Manage Trino cluster configuration, execution models, resource groups, and query planning.
Ensure high availability, scalability, and fault tolerance of Trino clusters.
Performance & Workload Management
Optimize query execution performance through memory, CPU, spill, and partitioning configuration.
Tune distributed queries using techniques such as joins, partition pruning, and predicate pushdown.
Implement workload management using resource groups, query prioritization, and concurrency limits.
Monitor query latency, cluster performance, resource usage, and overall system health.
Troubleshoot query failures, resource contention, and system-level issues.
Data Architecture & Integration
Support data access across modern data architectures including data lakes, lakehouses, and data mesh environments.
Work with open table formats, particularly Apache Iceberg.
Contribute to architecture decisions around data lakes, federated queries, and distributed analytics.
Collaborate with Data Engineers and Analysts to establish best practices for efficient data access.
Monitoring, Security & Operations
Implement and use observability solutions such as Prometheus, Grafana, and Dynatrace.
Monitor, alert, and troubleshoot distributed data platforms.
Support security and access control mechanisms including LDAP, Kerberos, and RBAC.
Identify and resolve platform-level performance and availability issues.
Contribute to platform reliability and operational improvements.
Required Qualifications & Experience
5+ years of experience working with distributed data systems, data platforms, or big data infrastructure.
Hands-on experience with Trino or Presto cluster deployment and operations.
Strong understanding of Trino architecture, including:
Coordinator and worker architecture
Execution model
Query planning
Resource groups
Experience with Kubernetes, containerization, or VM-based distributed systems.
Experience integrating data sources such as Hive, Metastore, Iceberg, and Kafka.
Strong experience in distributed query optimization and performance tuning.
Hands-on experience with Apache Iceberg and open table formats.
Experience with Kubernetes, Linux, and networking.
Experience with monitoring, alerting, and troubleshooting distributed systems.
Basic scripting/programming experience using Python and/or Bash.
Strong system-level debugging and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in financial services or other regulated environments.
Familiarity with Java/JVM-based systems.
Experience with LDAP, Kerberos, and enterprise RBAC.
Experience with Prometheus, Grafana, or Dynatrace.
Experience working with data lake, lakehouse, or data mesh architectures.
Experience contributing to federated query and distributed analytics solutions.
